Who should apply for ILD? 


Successful candidates bring a minimum of three years' experience in the development sector, show promise of becoming a leader in their field, and have potential to be a strong role model for other development professionals. The Institute for Leaders in Development is actively seeking candidates from all racial and ethnic backgrounds and from nonprofit organizations of all sizes, missions, and budget ranges.


Candidate Profile


  • Is a development professional in the nonprofit sector who demonstrates the qualities and attributes that others would identify in an emerging leader
  • Has the potential to be a strong role model and opinion shaper within the community and with other nonprofit leaders
  • Brings a minimum of three years' experience in fund development, and demonstrates a proven track record of forging successful one-on-one relationships with donors and volunteers resulting in increased donations for the institution
  • Wishes to move into a major gift role, manage a development department, broaden their skill-set, and become a leader in the field of fund development and/or the nonprofit sector
  • Has the expectation of serving at least 10 years as a leader in current organization, other nonprofit organizations, and/or in a position that would have considerable influence on the sector
  • Has an interest in developing a deeper understanding of self and purpose as a leader and a propensity to be an inquisitive learner
  • Is committed to making significant contributions in advancing nonprofit practices and policies and in exploring new solutions to the complex challenges facing nonprofit organizations 
  • Is working in an established, Colorado-based, 501(c)(3) organization that would fully support their participation in ILD and that would provide opportunities for application of the knowledge and insight gained through ILD
  • Has confirmed that the timing of the Institute works well for the individual and the organization and that there are no anticipated conflicts
  • Has a willingness and desire to share with, learn from, and stimulate meaningful conversation with community leaders, including Institute cohorts and peers in the nonprofit sector
  • Has a commitment to assisting successive ILD classes and to participating in alumni activities
